Biography
Stan focuses his practice on complex litigation, usually involving scientific, technical or medical issues, including products liability, professional liability, environmental, insurance and health care law.
In 1994, Stan was elected a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and is one of five ACTL Fellows in the firm. More recently, he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America in Business Litigation and Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers.
Stan is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, The Missouri Bar, the Defense Research Institute and the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel. He is a member of the ABA's Litigation and Tort and Personal Injury Sections, the Toxic Tort Committee of the DRI and the Science and Technology in the Courtroom Committee of the American College.
He is technology partner for both the firm and SHB's General Litigation Division and is tasked with the effective and efficient deployment of technology solutions within the firm. He is also a member of the firm's Toxic Tort and Insurance & Reinsurance Practice Groups. Stan is a frequent CLE lecturer, author on trial procedure and trial practice and teacher of SHB's trial advocacy program courses in Basic Litigation Skills and Advanced Trial Workshop.
Stan graduated from the Kansas Institute of Trial Advocacy NITA Program in 1978. While in law school, he was an associate editor and, later, note and comment editor of the Kansas Law Review.
Prior to the start of his legal career, Stan served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1974 as a surface warfare officer aboard ship, chief staff officer of a Coastal River Division and officer-in-charge of PTF-17.
Matters of Note
National trial counsel in cell phone, security alarm, fire alarm and fire suppression industry cases.
Tried 35 cases to jury-verdict conclusion, most of which were multiweek, complex cases.
Handled numerous class action cases involving contract and consumer fraud issues in state and federal courts, including multidistrict litigation (MDL) cases.
Drafted state and federal legislation and testified three times before U.S. Congressional Committees on surface transportation and agricultural issues.
Handled all of previous firm’s health care, environmental and insurance coverage litigation for more than 20 years.
Handled bankruptcy court and Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals’ litigation, negotiation and document preparation for acquisition of the former Rock Island Line from Salina, Kansas, to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1982.
