COMING SOON: Chicago information
Shook permits attorneys of any level with at least two years' experience to work reduced hours upon approval. Associates who work on an alternative schedule remain eligible for partnership and continue to accrue time toward it.
All attorneys receive paid parental leave (14 weeks for the primary caregiver, 3 weeks for the secondary caregiver) for birth or adoption. Primary caregivers can “phase back” into work over the course of three months, rather than coming back 100 percent at the end of leave.
Domestic Partner Benefits
Shook’s benefits cover domestic partners, including paternity/maternity leave and health insurance.
Transgender attorneys are eligible for medical benefits, including mental health services, medically necessary surgeries, pharmacy benefits for transition and ongoing hormone care.
Professional Association Memberships
Shook pays for memberships and license fees for the state in which the attorney is located and for one additional state in which we have a domestic office. Shook will also pay for two voluntary bar associations or professional organizations and membership dues for one local diverse bar association.
Reasonable moving and travel expenses are included for incoming associates who live more than 50 miles from the office.
Shook covers the bar examination fees and expenses for one bar review course in preparation for the state bar examination where the attorney will practice.
New Associate Stipend
In addition to other payments and reimbursements, Shook pays a stipend to assist with living costs for recent graduates who are sitting for the bar exam prior to starting at the firm.
EAP (Employee Assistance Program)
Up to six free visits with a counselor are available to employees and their dependents, for confidential, short term counseling. EAP also provides legal assistance for matters including will preparation and contract review.
The firm offers you and your eligible dependents a choice of medical, dental and vision plans, as well as life insurance and long term disability. The firm pays a portion of the costs for medical insurance, as well as a portion of the dependent medical costs. Shook pays 100% of cost for life insurance and long term disability coverage. Dental and vision coverage are entirely paid for by employees.
Flexible Spending Account
Non-partner attorneys can pay out-of-pocket medical, dental, vision and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars. By paying with pre-tax dollars, employees save an average of 25 cents on each dollar spent.
Shook offers the opportunity to participate in a 401(k) plan. We also contribute funds equal to 7.5 percent of your base earnings into a money purchase pension plan (or MPPP), starting after 2 years with the firm.
Full and half-time non-partner attorneys receive a transportation allowance each month ranging from $50 to $75 depending on office location. The firm also allows you to set aside a monthly election amount for public transportation and/or qualified parking expenses. Amounts up to the IRS plan year limit will be pre-tax; anything above the pre-tax limit will be deducted on an after-tax basis.
