In addition to our areas of expertise, our Washington D. C. office is dedicated to working with the underserved in the community. Our Washington D. C. attorneys have represented clients as diverse as a Guantanamo detainee; a religiously-persecuted Cameroon seeking U.S. asylum; and a homeless individual requesting government assistance. In August 2008, SHB District of Columbia attorney Phil Goldberg represented a grandmother in a custody case. His client had taken care of her three-year-old grandson since just days after his birth. The boy?s father died as a result of leukemia, and his mother was not a reliable or consistent parent and did not provide him with necessities, especially in terms of providing medical care. After an evidentiary hearing, the client testified as to her ability to provide care for the boy, and the court awarded her full custody of the child. SHB has also worked with the D. C. attorney general in a case involving the exploitation of immigrant workers.
