CBS Miami Features Saikali on Phone Number Privacy

Shook, Hardy & Bacon Privacy and Data Security Chair Al Saikali was featured in a CBS Miami interview about the legal implications surrounding phone numbers and personal privacy. “Privacy Experts Say Your Phone Number Is As Sensitive As Your SSN” examines how phone numbers can be used to access information such as date of birth, social security number and addresses.

According to Saikali, cell phone numbers are not usually considered personally identifiable information and thus not covered by data breach notification laws. Because privacy laws vary from state to state, Saikali further explains that “every company is supposed to have a privacy policy that discloses what personally identifiable information is,” and that those companies must disclose what they are “collecting from consumers, what they’re doing with that information, who they’re sharing it with, and how they’re using it.”
