SHB Earns Top Rating on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index
Shook, Hardy & Bacon has earned a score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s 2012 Corporate Equality Index for a third consecutive year. The top rating secures the firm a place on HRC’s list of the “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality.”
“We work hard to foster an inclusive environment that provides equal opportunities for our LGBT staff and attorneys to achieve their highest potential, and we support events and activities in the larger community to demonstrate by example how critical it is for all of us to embrace workplace diversity,” said SHB Chair John Murphy. “We recognize that diversity is not an option—it’s the way we do business. We know that we best serve our clients by bringing a wealth of perspectives and experiences to the resolution of their legal issues. Shook, Hardy & Bacon is proud of this HRC honor,” he said.
SHB was one of just 55 U.S. law firms to achieve a 100-percent rating. A total of 139 law firms were surveyed, including a majority of The American Lawyer’s 200 highest-grossing law firms.
HRC’s Corporate Equality Index examines various industries’ workplace protections and benefits for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees across the nation. The current survey rates law firms and other companies on a scale from 0 percent to 100 percent using criteria that include non-discrimination policies and training which cover sexual orientation and gender identity and a public commitment to the LGBT community demonstrated by such efforts as philanthropic support to LGBT organizations or support of LGBT equality under the law. HRC is the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization in the United States. It “envisions an America where LGBT people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.”
