San Francisco Attorneys
The San Francisco attorneys in the international law firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. (SHB) make up a unique team of talented professionals. From the day we opened our office in San Francisco in 1998, our new office was up and running. Whether we are representing a client regarding a toxic tort, working on a pro bono case with an individual that cannot afford the legal services of other San Francisco attorneys or leading a community service effort, SHB attorneys do so with a well-deserved reputation for providing professional services at a cost-effective rate.
Founded more than a century ago in Kansas City, SHB operates from nine offices worldwide: Geneva, London, Kansas City, Tampa, Miami, Washington, D. C., Houston, Orange County and San Francisco. Attorneys in all our offices specialize in a variety of legal arenas. An area of focus for our San Francisco office is toxic tort.
Our success in the toxic tort arena stems from decades of trial experience combined with an in-depth knowledge of the scientific issues surrounding contaminant fate and transport in air, soil and groundwater. As plaintiff claims have become increasingly creative and aggressive, the SHB Toxic Tort Practice has kept pace with the exponential rise in the magnitude and complexity of these cases. We look beyond immediate regulatory issues to assist clients with the toxic tort implications of a particular site, developing risk-based cleanup standards and addressing contamination allegations. This practice has defended class actions and individual cases based on a panoply of common law theories, including negligence, fraud, failure to warn, negligent misrepresentation, trespass, private and public nuisance, and damage claims such as “fear of cancer” and medical monitoring. With access to the firm's veteran litigators and their wide range of legal expertise, our SHB San Francisco attorneys excel at delivering comprehensive solutions that satisfy diverse business interests.
We have handled cases involving Superfund and National Priority List (NPL) sites; challenges to governmental actions under the Clean Water Act, the Oil Pollution Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and safe drinking water standards; mass torts arising from catastrophic events and the transportation of hazardous materials; and CERLCA contribution litigation and arbitration. In addition, SHB has managed or resolved compliance issues involving potential contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds (e.g., benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xyelene), including chlorinated solvents (e.g., PCE, TCE, 1,1,1-TCA) and their daughter products, such as vinyl chloride; semi-volatile compounds (e.g., PAHs); pesticides and herbicides; PCBs;dioxins; metals (e.g., arsenic, chromium, lead, and mercury); cyanide; sodium hypochlorite; chlorine gas; perchlorate and rocket fuel propellants; and gasoline additives, such as MTBE.
