Kansas City Partner Mischa Buford Epps has been recognized in the 2007 edition of MultiCultural Law Magazine as a Diversity Advocate, while the firm was named to the publication's lists of top 100 firms that champion the diversity cause, one of the top 100 firms for women and one of the top 25 law firms for Hispanics. Mischa, who has been with SHB for more than 12 years, has proved an exception to a disturbing trend that sees minority female attorneys leaving firms at high rates five to eight years after being hired. She credits her longevity to "a great mentor like Lisa White Hardwick," a former SHB partner currently serving on the Missouri Court of Appeals, and she is dedicated to serving as a role model in her own right. Mischa helped found the firm's Diversity Committee and once served as its chair. She is quoted as saying, "Recruiting and retaining lawyers of color are priorities for SHB and it is one of the reasons that I am still here and doing my part."
