Shook, Hardy & Bacon Of Counsel Jolie Justus has been named Legislator of the Year for 2014 by both the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (MAPA) and the Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MACDL). In addition to her role as Shook’s Director of Pro Bono Services, Justus is a Missouri state senator who currently serves as Senate Minority Leader. The honor recognizes her successful three-year effort to pass a complete revision of the Missouri Criminal Code. She received MACDL’s award at the organization’s annual conference in April 2014 and will receive MAPA’s award during its annual meeting at Lake of the Ozarks in August.
Missouri’s criminal code was last revised 35 years ago. The bill, which was passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Jay Nixon (D) earlier in 2013, was the result of an eight-year effort led by The Missouri Bar. The changes will take effect in January 2017.
