The Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (MAPA) selected Shook Attorney Kevin Corlew as the Legislator of the Year 2017 for Missouri. Corlew serves as a state representative for Missouri in District 104, which is a portion of Platte County. MAPA selected Corlew in part for his role in improving the criminal justice system. Representative Corlew sponsored HB 153 which protects Missourians from questionable testimony by unqualified expert witnesses in court cases.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to be able to work with the association to improve Missouri’s courts and criminal justice system,” said Corlew, R – Kansas City. “I’m thankful to be recognized but even more thankful for the efforts of Missouri’s prosecutors and for the support of my colleagues in the legislature who helped make this common-sense reform become law.”
Corlew also passed legislation to update and clarify the criminal code. When presenting the prosecutors’ award, Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahn also commended Corlew because he continued to sponsor legislation to clarify the law regarding when judges must instruct juries on lesser-included offenses and because he successfully opposed legislation that would have retroactively reduced the sentences of offenders currently serving life-without-parole sentences for murder convictions.
"Missouri's prosecutors thank Rep. Corlew for his exceptional work and efforts to improve the criminal justice system and protect public safety,” said Jason Lamb, who serves as the executive director of MAPA. “Rep. Corlew has been a consistently strong voice on behalf of crime victims in the Missouri General Assembly. We are proud to recognize him as the Legislator of the Year."
Corlew represents business clients in a variety of commercial, tort and environmental matters in federal and state courts and before regulatory agencies.
