With more than 12 years of litigation experience, Joy focuses her practice on civil litigation discovery matters. Her significant litigation management duties include the coordination of national counsel to address and resolve pre-trial matters with an emphasis on complex discovery issues. She has extensive experience in pre-trial proceedings, including researching and preparing initial pleadings, propounding discovery requests and responding to discovery. Her most recent experience has been working with Shook, Hardy & Bacon trial teams handling complex product liability, business, tobacco and pharmaceutical litigation in both federal and state courts.
Joy also serves as a member of Shook's Data and Discovery Strategies Practice, which provides comprehensive litigation support tailored to clients' needs, preferences and objectives. In this capacity, Joy developed a facility for efficiently handling electronic document review projects that range in size from several hundred pages to millions of pages, applying privilege claims to company documents and defending those claims when necessary. Her knowledge includes analyzing documents and electronically stored information, and preparing cases for trial.
Joy's commitment to the community is demonstrated by the many hours she devotes to pro bono practice on behalf of Kansas Legal Services and Voluntary Attorney Project, representing low-income clients facing, among other matters, divorce, criminal expungements, CINC and guardianship issues. Providing legal assistance in cases with a lasting impact, Joy also helps foster families adopt children who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. In addition, she co-founded the Shook Kansas Pro Bono Task Force, successfully expanding the firm's pro bono presence in Kansas by partnering with Kansas Legal Services and providing CLE training to attorneys. Joy is also accredited with the Department of Veterans Affairs to handle veteran disability claims. In 2012 and 2018, the Kansas Bar Association recognized these efforts by awarding Joy the Pro Bono Certificate of Appreciation. She has also received Shook's William G. Zimmerman Pro Bono Award in 2014. Joy currently volunteers with the United Way, chairing a grant review committee.
