Mike serves as national and trial counsel defending corporations in high-stakes litigation across the United States. He has extensive experience representing product manufacturers in the highly regulated cigarette, pharmaceutical and medical device industries, litigating cases from new matter intake through trial. Additionally, Mike has represented companies successfully in property disputes and insurance matters and has represented plaintiffs in civil rights litigation.
He has litigated hundreds of complex, multimillion-dollar product liability cases during his career. Currently, he spends much of his time representing Philip Morris USA in smoking-and-health lawsuits. In that role, he manages teams responsible for defending the company in dozens of Engle-progeny cases in five Florida jurisdictions and in pro se cases throughout the country. His work often involves working with lawyers from other firms and coordinating defense strategy in multi-defendant cases.
Mike also has attended the Harvard Program on Negotiation, an interdisciplinary colloquium dedicated to developing the theory and practice of negotiation and dispute resolution in a range of public and private settings. In addition to his primary practice, Mike devotes a significant amount of time to pro bono work, mentoring young lawyers and other activities benefiting the Kansas City community.
