Mike is an experienced trial lawyer who has more than 18 years of experience defending corporations in high-stakes litigation across the United States. During his career, Mike has litigated hundreds of complex, multimillion-dollar product liability cases from new matter through trial and beyond. He has spent the majority of his legal career serving clients in the highly regulated tobacco, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. In addition, he has represented companies successfully in property disputes and insurance matters and has represented plaintiffs in pro bono civil rights litigation.

As trial counsel, Mike has tried four cases to verdict. For example, he served as second chair counsel in Fields v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., et al. in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, which resulted in a complete defense verdict for Philip Morris USA Inc. All told, since beginning his career as a lawyer, Mike has represented Philip Morris USA in more than 25 trials, working his way up from junior associate to trial counsel.

In addition to his trial work, Mike manages teams responsible for defending Philip Morris USA in dozens of cases, often coordinating joint defense strategy with lawyers from other firms who represent different defendants. Further, he recently began defending Bayer in personal injury cases involving the use of Roundup.

Mike completed the Harvard Program on Negotiation, an interdisciplinary colloquium dedicated to developing the theory and practice of negotiation and dispute resolution in a variety of settings.

Mike devotes a significant amount of time to pro bono work, to mentoring young lawyers, and to other activities benefiting the Kansas City community. He is a member and former president of the Hospital Hill Run Board of Directors.
