Sandrock: Trends in California Antitrust Law

The geographic concentration of big tech companies in California makes the state one of the most important antitrust jurisdictions in the world, according to Shook Antitrust Practice Co-Chair Ryan Sandrock. He discusses the latest trends in California antitrust cases in an Antitrust practice guide for Chambers and Partners.

In the guide, which focuses on California antitrust law, he notes that the state's Cartwright Act and Unfair Competition Law can be just as important as federal law such as the Sherman Act. Sandrock adds that antitrust regulators remain active in California, and there is talk of further expansion of the state's antitrust laws.

"The deep history of California antitrust will continue with the next wave of antitrust technology cases," he forecasts. "We can expect some litigants to steer away from California courts and precedent, while others will try to keep cases in or transfer cases to California."
