Shook Expands E-Discovery, Investigations, Compliance and Data Breach Capabilities with Addition of Oot
Patrick Oot has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Shook, Hardy & Bacon as a partner in the eDiscovery, Data & Document Management Practice.
Patrick comes to the firm from his position as senior special counsel for electronic discovery in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC’s) Office of the General Counsel. During his SEC tenure, Patrick counseled senior leadership and staff on best practices and guidance for discovery and litigation strategy, privilege protections and strategically significant matters involving forensics, technology and Electronic Communications Privacy Act interpretation for subpoena enforcement. He also litigated interpleader actions, labor arbitration and personnel disputes, as well as litigation related to the Right to Financial Privacy Act.
“Patrick is one of the few outside attorneys who have combined corporate counsel and government experience,” said Jamie Brown, Global eDiscovery Counsel at UBS AG. “Having a similar background, I can see that this will be a tremendous asset to the firm's clients, particularly those in regulated industries.”
Admitted to practice before the state courts of New York and Massachusetts, Patrick received his LL.M. in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center, and his J.D. and B.A. from Syracuse University. He regularly lectures at educational events and legal conferences, and he has appeared on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition.
According to eDiscovery, Data & Document Management Co-chair Amor Esteban, “Patrick’s expertise, including the time he spent in-house as director of electronic discovery and senior counsel with Verizon, will add depth to Shook’s practice, and we are delighted to welcome him.”
“Patrick’s knowledge of litigation technology process, information governance and Microsoft’s Office365 offerings will be a strategic asset to Shook, Hardy & Bacon and its clients,” said Nishan DeSilva, Senior Director of Business & Technology Strategy in Microsoft’s Legal & Corporate Affairs Group. “As a regular participant in Microsoft’s Compliance Council providing strategic advice on legal solutions, I look forward to our continued strategic alliance,” he said.
