Shook Partners Discuss Cybersecurity at Northwestern University School of Law

Shook, Hardy & Bacon Partners George Dougherty and Al Saikali cover “The First 48 Hours: A Simulated Data Breach” at Northwestern University Pritzer School of Law’s 55th Annual Corporate Counsel Institute on September 29-30, 2016, in Chicago, Illinois. Saikali also leads Shook’s Data Security and Privacy team.

Dougherty serves as moderator while Saikali joins a panel of legal and forensic experts to discuss the procedures critical during the first 48 hours of a data breach.

According to Osterman Research, Inc., nearly 50 percent of organizations have been hit by ransomware; in Q1 2016 alone, the cost to companies targeted by ransomware attacks is estimated at over $209 million. The panel works through a mock ransomware scenario to identify best legal practices for this type of incident. The session covers how companies can minimize liability after suffering such a data breach, including identifying, vetting and engaging appropriate data breach vendors, knowing when to notify third parties, and recent trends in attack vectors and available tools.
