Shook Sponsors Inaugural Year of Student Law Academy
Shook is proud to be one of the sponsors of the inaugural year of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation’s Student Law Academy (SLA), an initiative to provide underprivileged urban high school students meaningful exposure to careers in the legal profession. Selected students will receive a three-week rotational internship with law firms, courts and other legal organizations. This year’s event begins June 10, and will conclude with a reception June 28 at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law.
SLA founders hope the program will serve as a pipeline to diversify Kansas City’s legal community. The program will leverage established partnerships among six school districts and three charter schools, including 15 urban high schools, and The Partnership for Regional Education Preparation – Kansas City (PREP-KC).
In addition to receiving career guidance and mentoring, students will have the opportunity to earn college credit and will be compensated through scholarships. They also will be provided with transportation and clothing.
The Bar Foundation’s mission is to create and support public service and educational programs that promote the administration of justice, delivery of legal services, professional development and respect for the law. Among its other service programs are Military Matters, the Domestic Violence Alliance and Project Pro Bono.
