Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Names Shook Attorney 2020 “Man of the Year”
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Mid-America Chapter (LLSMAC) has named Shook Attorney Marty Bax as its 2020 “Man of the Year.” Bax and his team raised more than $35,000 during a three-month period that ended June 18. Donations support the blood-cancer research organization during a time when many nonprofits are vulnerable.
“[COVID-19] made it more challenging not just for our team, but for everyone else who was trying to raise money as well because many fundraising events had to be cancelled and some sponsorships were ultimately pulled,” said Bax, a product liability associate. “Nonetheless, those raising money for LLS persisted and I truly admire what all my fellow fundraisers were able to accomplish because the fight against blood cancers didn’t – and couldn’t – slow down for anything.”
Each year, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Kansas City recognizes two individuals who raise the most money for the organization during a select fundraising timeline by honoring them as the “Man and Woman of the Year.” Seeking donations during a pandemic proved to be an added challenge for this year’s campaigns.
“The support from Shook staff and attorneys was overwhelming,” said Bax. “Many individual members of the Shook family went out of their way to make this fundraising effort a success, whether it was by participating in the pie-in-the-face contest, securing auction items, making connections with potential donors, or by simply making donations themselves.”
