St. Louis Post-Dispatch Reports on Shook Prisoner Rights Verdict

Shook obtained an $8.5 million award for its client as the representative of her late brother, a federal detainee at the Phelps County Jail in Rolla, Missouri. The jury returned a verdict against a doctor, nurse and Advanced Correctional Healthcare, Inc.—the largest health care provider for jails in the U.S.—for a Section 1983 deliberate indifference claim and medical negligence.

“It was a great privilege to win this for the family and bring some closure for his loved ones,” said Shook Partner Charles Eblen. “It is the first time a jury issued a verdict against ACH.”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch Columnist Tony Messenger writes about the win for the family.

The Shook trial team included Partners Charlie Eblen, a pending fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, Brandon Gutshall, Lindsey Heinz and many others. The case is Hill v Advanced Correctional Healthcare, Inc., in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri Eastern Division, 4:20-cv-00804-JMB.
