Shook Recognized for Outstanding Outcomes by Florida’s Daily Business Review
During a recent Miami, Florida, event honoring recipients of The Daily Business Review’s “Litigation Department of the Year” awards, Shook, Hardy & Bacon was recognized for its successes in the Product Liability & Mass Torts category.
Based on cases filed, tried or on appeal throughout 2012, including pro bono matters, Shook was specifically cited for the work spearheaded by the firm’s Miami and Tampa offices defending the Engle-progeny litigation, which involves personal injury claims filed by individual smokers in Florida courthouses against cigarette manufacturers.
The Review noted that Shook Partner Ken Reilly led four individual Engle trials that ended in mistrials and that “[n]ewly minted Miami managing partner William Geraghty first-chaired three of the [seven cases to go to trial in 2012], two resulting in defense verdicts and one that resulted in a $3.5 million award in Highlands County that is on appeal.”
Because the Review also looked to work that firms located in Florida do in courtrooms throughout the country as part of a national practice, Shook was further recognized in its feature article for its successful product-liability defense of other Fortune 500 clients from the pharmaceutical, retail and chemical industries.
