Matt is an experienced litigator working in the firm’s General Liability Practice Group. He has substantial experience with complex product liability matters involving automobiles, medical devices, industrial machinery, construction equipment, recreational and sporting goods and other consumer products. He also maintains an active commercial litigation practice in which he represents large and small companies in a wide range of business disputes. 

Previously in his career, Matt advised clients on liability and exposure evaluation in connection with claims and litigation matters in civil litigation, insurance coverage, consumer protection and insurance defense. Matt has handled a wide range of cases involving extra-contractual liability, and equitable remedies, as well as prosecuting complex civil RICO actions on behalf of insurers.

Representative Matters

First chair in bench trial resulting in judgment in favor of insurer on claim for extra-contractual liability.

First chair in bench trial obtaining defense verdict in bicycle product liability action in Massachusetts (state) District Court.

Second chair in week-long trial which secured declaratory judgment of non-coverage in favor of insurer which was later upheld on appeal without argument.

Obtained defense verdict as member of trial team on four-week jury trial in automobile product liability wrongful death case in Connecticut Superior Court.

Secured dismissal of product liability claims against manufacturer and distributor of robotic-assisted surgical technology device. 

Secured dismissal of product liability claims against manufacturer and distributor of medical device used in spinal fixation and fusion procedures.

Member of trial team on six-week insurance coverage trial in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland in case concerning eight-figure claim for defense costs in connection with underlying multidistrict litigation involving distribution of tainted pharmaceuticals.

Secured dismissal of product liability claims against manufacturer of automobile accessory distributor brought on behalf of pedestrian struck by automobile.

Obtained summary judgment in product liability case in favor of manufacturer of automated commercial food production machinery.

Obtained summary judgment in favor of leasee of commercial property which determined that lease did not require the leasee to indemnify landlord for costs of statutory environmental compliance.

Obtained summary judgment in favor of real estate investment firm which secured money judgment in excess of $475,000, reaching through the insolvent limited liability company to hold its principal liable in his individual capacity.

Prosecuted complex civil RICO actions that arose from insurance fraud schemes in several jurisdictions in United States District Courts .

First and second chair in trials in Massachusetts Superior and District Courts representing insurers in coverage and extra-contractual liability matters.

Drafted successful appellate brief for Massachusetts Appeals Court in which the Court upheld Superior Court judgment in favor of defendant-insurer.

Obtained summary judgment in favor of defendant-insurer in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
