Ryan’s practice encompasses a broad array of business and complex commercial litigation, including class action defense. He has significant experience in actions alleging false advertising, unfair competition, product liability, breach of contract, fraud, misappropriation of trade secrets, negligence and other tort claims. His work has covered nearly all stages of litigation, in both state and federal court, from initial fact investigation through the pleading stage, fact and expert discovery, dispositive motion practice, trial and appeals. Ryan also has extensive experience with alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration. Ryan has represented consumer goods manufacturers and retailers, a major energy producer, technology companies, dietary supplement manufacturers, and individuals. Ryan prides himself in developing cost-effective litigation strategies that best meet his clients’ litigation and business objectives.

Before joining Shook, Ryan worked as a litigation associate for Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP and Theodora Oringher PC. While attending UCLA School of Law where he earned his J.D., he also served as a judicial extern for the Honorable R. Gary Klausner of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

 

Representative Matters

Defended various consumer goods retailers and dietary supplement manufacturers in class actions alleging false advertising claims under California’s consumer protection statutes.

Defended commercial and residential goods manufacturer in class action alleging product liability and construction defect claims. Prevailed on summary judgment as to most claims and disposed of remaining class claims on a preemptive motion to deny class certification, which was granted in full following successful interlocutory appeal. The California Court of Appeal published its opinion in Kohler Co. v. Superior Court, 29 Cal. App. 5th 55 (2018).

Defended major energy producer in multiple mass actions related to various franchise disputes, including through successful bellwether trial and appeals after judgment.

Represented technology company in action alleging breach of contract, misappropriation of trade secrets and copyright infringement claims.

Defended major energy producer in multiple actions by municipalities alleging tort claims related to climate change.

Represented public transportation agency in various construction disputes arising in multiple rail construction projects.

Represented waste collection company in arbitration alleging breach of contract claims.

Represented former CEO of technology company in arbitration alleging breach of contract claim. Obtained favorable arbitration award granting full amount of damages, costs and sanctions claimed.

Represented former executives of technology company in action alleging defamation claims against acquiring company and its executives.
