Schwartz Honored in University of Cincinnati Law Review
The University of Cincinnati Law Review has honored Shook Public Policy Group Founder and Co-Chair Victor Schwartz in a special edition. Schwartz, who passed away in July 2025, was with the firm for more than 24 years and was a peerless thought leader, scholar and advocate for civil justice reform. Before joining Shook, Schwartz served as a professor and dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Law, and the Law Review’s suite is named in his honor. Students from the law school invited Shook Public Policy Group Co-Chair Mark Behrens and Senior Counsel Christopher Appel to attend the Law Review’s spring banquet and invited articles for a special written symposium edition in Schwartz’s honor.
The edition includes two lead articles authored by Shook attorneys, including “The Early Returns Are In: A Review of the First Two Years of Amended Federal Rule of Evidence 702,” authored by Lee Mickus, Behrens and Appel, and “Curbing Unsupported Claims in Mass Tort Litigation” by Shook Partner Cary Silverman. The former covers the history of a 2023 amendment to Rule of Evidence 702 and important court cases applying the amended rule, while the latter is focused on the drivers of unsupported claims and solutions for addressing them. Another lead article, “Victor Schwartz: Issues and Reforms in Mass Tort Litigation,” focuses on Schwartz’s legacy, highlighting changes and proposed reforms championed by Schwartz.
